In that case, any idea off hand how to get around this problem?

ld: common symbols not allowed with MH_DYLIB output format with the -multii_module option /usr/local/mysql/lib/libmysqlclient.a(charset.o) definition of common _all_charsets (size 1024) /usr/local/mysql/lib/libmysqlclient.a(my_error.o) definition of common _errbuff (size 512)
/usr/bin/libtool: internal link edit command failed

Well, I just tried the latest snapshot (dated 7/15). I got the
libmysqlclient.a error.
I'm not in the mood to waste time at work installing subversion, and
then fighting with that if it doesn't work, just to get a newer copy of
some software that I'm pretty sure doesn't work to findout why it
doesn't work.

The latest snapshot should be the same as a svn download.
