Don't beat up on Microsoft when you're on shaky ground ;) Before RFC 4551, there were just two strategies: Fetch all the flags repeatedly and don't refetch them. Both suck.

If you refetch (as e.g. Opera does) you incur a regular O(n) cost, where n is the number of messages in the mailbox. If your connection to the server is slow or has pay-per-byte hops, such as a laptop with a GSM card, you really don't want that O(n) cost. If you don't refect, you lose when the user uses two MUAs.

Choose your poison. Me, I think Microsoft chose the right one - paying extra GSM charges hurts more than having outdated flags.

Now that RFC 4551 has been published, you have a third option: Implement it and dream that one day there'll be server support ;)
