Yes. That's the easiest solution. Looks like the charset fixes work for
latin1 storage just fine. UTF8 with unicode collation will probably
cover most charsets, but if you don't care about supporting non-western
charsets latin1 will cover your bases.

Converting an existing latin1 mysql store will be documented, but isn't
yet.
