Indeed. Thank you for doing some research. Once every ten seconds might
work for me at home because it's just a handful of users. For larger
sites, once every few minutes would be better.

Here's a bigger picture question: should IDLE ever be disabled, and if
not, what should be the upper limit on the delay between events?

I think that it should not be disable-able (heh, English is great), and
that the maximum delay should be 15 minutes. At that point, it's no
different load-wise than a client that pings the server with a NOOP
every 15 minutes.

I have no idea what a good default delay should be. Somewhere in the
range of 30 - 60 seconds sounds good to me. This would be the delay used
if no idle timeout setting is found in the config file at all.
