that would also mean "if we have scheme 4 and the new dbmail-version
come swith scheme 8" then it has to apply 4->5, 5->6, 6->7, 7->8 in
exactly this order which prevents magic to summarize the change 4->8
in one step, well it may take longer but it is predictable and less
error prone over the long

given that the dbmail-schema does not change that often but *if* it
changes and improves usually with a very good reason that's the way
i would go to maintain it over decades
