and pre-forking is not scaleable for Imap - keep in mind that clients have for 
each folder a own connection - 1000 clients with 3 folders mean 3000 processes 
and 3000 database connections and finally you need many GB RAM only for mysql 
buffers besides the footprint of the Imap processes - in doubt it may be more 
stable because a process can die in peace without impact on other connections 
but the price is high

Not really. The pre-forking architecture just means you don't notice
when a imapd process crashes.
