you should probably add libzdb, dbmail (and i suppose also
libmysqlclient) versions you are using.

Debian 7.1, with the bare minimum installed (fresh build) just to get
DBMail up and running. LibZDB was downloaded from their website and
built/installed with MySQL support against the default libmysqlclient
available via apt.
I've tried this twice now on two different boxes, same result. What is
libzdb complaining about?
