One problem I do have is that squirrelmail is now even SLOWER than it
was before. Squirrelmail would previously take 15-20 seconds to show
it's initial screen after logging in, now it takes over a minute. This
is all over a Gb lan with an unloaded 16GB i7 server using SSD's in
raid1, with dbmail, mysql and apache all on the same server. Any
thoughts on that? I might just have to move to roundcube.

I haven't looked at, or tested with SM for ages. Maybe it's doing
something that triggers a really slow query somewhere. Check your slow
query logs; both mysql and dbmail keep track of those.

I am using both in parallel (mostly use Squirrel from my phone though) and both work fine now. I do have quite a lot of imap folders and they all get unread count when logging in. Maybe something to do with migration from dbmail-2 data? (did you finish all your "dbmail -m" yet?)

Anyway: roundcube was and is a *massive* upgrade compared to
squirrelmail and/or horde/imp, in my experience.

Mostly, although a few things I prefer in SM ^^ (in particular I'd like to know why they removed priority and return receipt buttons from the compose window -- or they hid them somewhere from me .. ^^)
