You hit a know MariaDB bug which I found last year. It did affect MariaDB < 5.5.33 https://mariadb.atlassian.net/browse/MDEV-4978 Any MariaDB versions mentioned in the 'affected version(s)' for that bug should be avoided like the plague with DBMail.
