You can negotiate the output format through Content Negotiation. I don't
use Ruby, so can't give you language-specific instructions, but Google is
your friend (search for content negotiation or HTTP headers in Ruby). The
generic instructions are in our docs:
https://github.com/dbpedia-spotlight/dbpedia-spotlight/wiki/Web-service
(look for Content Negotiation at the bottom)

For example, in order to request JSON output, you can add "Accept:
application/json" to the HTTP request headers.
