i am almost certain that the radio station chatter on the tape was caused by the mic cables, amplifiers or other electric equipment picking up the am signal. i am almost certain that there was + still is a large radio tower on the au campus. there is a good chance that wmal b'cast from that tower back in '72. there is another location in wdc that has had free concerts for the past 35 yrs that has the same problem with radio interference.
