Every 27 minutes or thereabouts, a newbie wanders into rmgd and says "I've heard about this great show, 5-8-77, where can I get a copy?".  A small but loyal group takes delight in tormenting said newbies with tales of a hoax.  "The show never happened".  "The tape is a fake".  Someone went so far as to put up a web page with the setlist and the corresponding "actual" dates for each song.

Well, showing how on the ball I am these days I have absolutely no idea what anybody is talking about re: hoax. Haven't looked at rmgd in years. But as I am the 1977 caretaker could someone enlighten me?

The "hoax" thing is a bad joke that originated on the rec.music.gdead usenet group a few years ago. The reason there's no notation about this joke is probably that most people don't consider it to be even worth commenting on. As more & more folks seem to actually be falling for the joke, it may be a good idea to add something in the comments section debunking the rumors.

Hi you probably get a lot of mail like this but I'm forced to ask this by a skeptical friend. What's the scoop on the hoax chatter surrounding this show? Is it purely generated by the combo of being label 'greatest show ever' and the oddities in the recording?
I found it interesting that my friend seems to be locked into what sounds like an urban legend yet you have nothing odd to say in you comments - clinical as usual. I took that as a good sign.
