My bad -- I had seen this in one of our automated nightly builds but when I
tried to run the same case on that machine I couldn't reproduce the problem.
Either way, I've happened to stumble on it on a different machine a few
minutes ago and there it was easy find. We were reading and writing beyond
the end of a string. It should be fixed now -- sorry for the distraction...
