I have had a look at the base and fe classes (directed by the FAQ and
using the documentation), but I have got lost as to where exactly the
coefficients of the polynomials are computed. (There must be a page in
the documentation I have missed).

Maybe this helps:

I think most of this is actually just documented in the code. You will have
to read the FE_Q class and in particular the FE_Poly class from which it
is derived.

As far as Hermite elements are concerned: that's a bit more complicated
since the degrees of freedom are also gradients in the vertices, which
depend on the mapping. You should talk to Baerbel Janssen who has been
implementing this sort of element.

For solving the plate problem I implemented the Adini rectangle and a C1-element in deal.ii. Take a look at my page

http://numerik.uni-hd.de/~baer/doxygen/html/index.html

This is not complete. But you might get an impression.

A slightly unrelated question for the fe masters: I am right in
thinking the Jacobian times weight matrix $JxW$ is unitary?
$JxW.(JxW)^T=1$; he's a coordinate transformation, right?

Uh, JxW is a vector of size # of quadrature points. The 'J' in it actually
refers to the *determinant* of the Jacobian. You cant think of JxW as the
dx in an integral.

W.
