parent of a cell in the way that one can find the children -- am I
missing something?
As far as I know, there is no such function.
I think I have had problems before setting the active FE index on used,
non-active cells. If the active FE index of non-active cells cannot be
changed then I'll have to settle on changing all the siblings to the
index that the target of the coarsening already has.
No, the active FE index cannot be changed on non-active cells, because
-- as the name already indicates -- there is no active FE on inactive cells.
