There's no interpolation going on. It's a projection.

In general, projecting a discontinuous element onto a continuous space necessarily leads to Gibbs phenomenon, i.e. your projection will have oscillations close to the discontinuity. Since all you say is that the solution looks "funny" there's no way for us to say whether that's the case or not.
