I forgot to also mention that I had to add some breaks to the switch
statements in tria_boundary_lib.cc to get this to run, otherwise it
catches the exception in the default.
Hm, can you point out where exactly this needed to be?

Sorry, in the switch statements in
HalfHyperShellBoundary<dim>::get_new_point_on_line and
HalfHyperShellBoundary<dim>::get_intermediate_points_on_line.
