PENNSYLVANIA:
Rendell signs death warrant for convicted killer
Gov. Rendell signed a warrant yesterday for the execution of a
Philadelphia man who shot his victim to death during a robbery and drug
deal.
Wilfredo Ramos, 28, was sentenced to death in 2000 for killing James
Crawford, 36, in Philadelphia 2 years earlier. The U.S. Supreme Court in
March refused to take up Ramos' appeal. His execution was set for Aug. 26.
Rendell has signed 18 death warrants since taking office in January 2003.
Only 3 people have been executed in Pennsylvania since the death penalty
was reinstated in 1978, the most recent in 1999. There are 227 people on
the state's death row.
