Oak City, NC Calls Moratorium "A Good Thing," Passes Resolution
Oak City, NC, August 2, 2004----The town council of Oak City, NC tonight
unanimously voted to call for an immediate moratorium on executions in
North Carolina.
The vote makes the Eastern North Carolina town with 339 residents the
23rd local government in the state to call for a moratorium.
With a crowd of nearly 50 people overflowing the town hall, nearly one
out of every seven Oak City residents were on hand for the vote. Town
residents nodded their heads in agreement as Jeremy Collins, field
director of the PFADP's NC Moratorium Now Campaign, explained why a
temporary suspension of executions is urgently needed.
Commissioner Linda Bunch motioned in favor of the resolution and
Commissioner Clinton Powell seconded the motion.
Republican Commissioner Joe Ayers said the moratorium is a "good thing"
but added that he supports the death penalty.
Oak City is located in Martin County about 25 miles north of Greenville.
Other Eastern NC towns that have passed moratorium resolutions include
Norlina, Winfall, Cofield, Garysburg, and Fayetteville.
