NEW YORK:
Capital Punishment
To the Editor:
Gov. George E. Pataki is cynically misleading in saying the
death penalty is necessary "to prevent dangerous killers
from getting back on the streets" ("No Execution in the
Killing of 2 Detectives," news article, Sept. 14). As the
governor knows, such killers are prevented from ever
getting back on the streets by life without parole.
Life without parole, unlike the death penalty, is a
constitutionally valid part of New York law, and it means
what it says.
