UGANDA:

Nakasongola Man Sentenced to Death for Stealing Goat

Court has sentenced a man to death for stealing a goat.

Justice Vincent Kagaba on Tuesday sentenced David Katushabe, alias
Serubombwe, 25, of Wampiti-Wabinyonyi village in Nakasongola district,
after finding him guilty of aggravated robbery.

Prosecution said on the night of November 23, 2003, Katushabe broke into
the enclosure, where Thomas Orech kept his goats and stole a goat.

Court heard that following the noise from the goats' pen, Orech woke up
and followed the direction the goat was taking. He saw Katushabe in the
bush and arrested him.

Katushabe hacked Orech's shoulder and fingers with the panga. He later
threw the panga in the bush when he saw Orech's neighbour.

Court dismissed Katushabe's defence that Orech had fabricated the offence
against him because of a grudge over land.

The judge said Katushabe was in possession of the panga at the time of the
robbery with intent to kill or disable whoever interfered with his
actions.

"You are sentenced to suffer death as the only punishment for your
offence," Kagaba said.
