MOLDOVA:

President for banning death penalty in Moldova

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin suggested the parliament make urgent
amendments to the constitution in order to ban death penalty in Moldova,
Voronin's press service told Interfax.

"Although Moldova's Criminal Code, approved in 2002, does not envisage
death penalty, the country's Constitution has a point on applying death
penalty 'for actions made during war or with an inevitable threat of
war,'" Voronin said.

Voronin believes that these points are damaging the country's image on
the international arena.
