PAKISTAN:

Execution of 6 family members delayed

The execution of 6 condemned prisoners was delayed for the 4th time, said
Faisalabads district prison superintendent. He added that the execution
had been suspended for 15 days.

"We received orders for deferment after the prisoners relatives met them
for the last time," said the superintendent. The convicts were to be
hanged here on August 3.

Prosecution sources said that Manzoor Ahmed, his son Muhammad Ishaq,
brother Muhammad Ilyas and 3 relatives Javed Iqbal, Ghulam Mustafa and
Muhammad Anwar killed, Maqbool Ahmed, his son Najeebullah and relative
Ghulam Muhammad in June 1989.

Additional sessions judge Abdul Razzak Bhatti sentenced them to death in
1991 and the High Court and Supreme Court upheld the decision. The
president rejected the convicts mercy plea. The convicts family had
delayed the hanging thrice earlier while trying to reach a compromise with
the victims family.
