INDIA:

Death sentence for double murder

A Delhi court today awarded death sentence to a 24-year-old man for
killing the wife and two-year-old daughter of a person whom he held
responsible for the losses in his business.

"The victims were killed in the most cruel manner. I am of the view that
it is a rarest of rare case inviting the maximum punishment", Additional
Sessions Judge Lal Singh observed while awarding capital punishment to
Sushil Kumar for murdering Anita and her daughter Megha here in 2002.

"The victims were slashed in such a manner as if vegetables were being cut
into small pieces... death of the victims has been caused in the most
cruel manner making the present case exceptional." the judge said.

The convict was doing the job of stitching buttons on clothes in a garment
factory at Okhla. When his contract ended, he was replaced by the husband
of the deceased, Anil Kumar, due to which he nursed a feeling of grudge
and jealousy against him following which there were many fights between
them.

On January 28, 2002, the convict went to the house of Anil in Sarita Vihar
area and in a fit of rage slashed the throat of Megha and then stabbed his
wife 23 times, mostly on the throat, killing them on the spot.

The prosecution led by APP R P Bhadana had examined 19 witnesses in the
case, one of which deposed that he had heard Sushil Kumar telling his
friend Amlesh that he had "lost his work because of Anil and he will be
taught a lesson".

The court accepted the prosecution plea that the mother and daughter were
killed in the most cruel manner without any provocation and accordingly it
deserved maximum punishment.

The order will be sent to High Court for confirmation
