INDIA:
Inmates debate capital punishment
Inmates of Model Jail on Saturday, held a brainstorming session on 'should
capital punishment be given' on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti. The topic
appealed to inmates who turned up in large numbers to express their views.
Even those who were present in hall merely to listen the debate had
excitement and eagerness written all over their faces. Opposition or
support to a speaker's view was often evident in murmurs. "We cannot take
life if we cannot give one," said Gajadhar Singh, while speaking against
the motion.
Ramu retorted "ask someone whose life has been spoiled, one is liable for
punishment if he/she kills someone," while supporting the motion. Another
speaker against the motion, Radhey Shyam Pandey said "great leaders of the
country like Mahatma Gandhi, Vinoba Bhave and Vivekanand were against
capital punishment.
Even former chief minister Sampoornanand believed that crime should not be
looked as an act of revenge but as an act of reformation. Life
imprisonment is like a death sentence for a convict as it results in a
separation from family and friends." However, Ramu countered Pandey by
questioning: "Are we advocating life-imprisonment only because we are
going through one."
