KANSAS:
Cheatham receives death penalty
Phillip Cheatham, 32, who was convicted of fatally shooting 2 women and
severely wounding a third in December 2003 during a brutal attack by 2
gunmen, today became only the 2nd defendant to be sentenced to death in a
Shawnee County District Courtroom.
Cheatham, who was convicted of capital murder in the deaths of Annette
Roberson and Gloria Jones, also was sentenced to other consecutive
sentences totalling an additional 78 years and 1 month.
The 2nd gunman remains at large.
No date has been scheduled for Cheatham's execution. The death penalty was
struck down by the Kansas Supreme Court in December 2004, but the U.S.
Supreme Court is reviewing whether the death penalty is constitutional.
