THE NETHERLANDS/INDONESIA:

Netherlands protests Indonesian drug death sentence Indonesia

The Netherlands has protested against the death sentence handed down to
one of its citizens in Indonesia for running an ecstasy factory.

The Dutch ambassador to Indonesia has spoken to Indonesian authorities to
convey concern about the sentence and to urge them to commute the
punishment.

Dutch national, Garnick Nicolaas, French national Serge Atlaoui and 5
Chinese nationals have been sentenced to death for running an ecstasy
production plant.

It has been described by Indonesian officials as one of the largest in
Southeast Asia.

Prosecutors say the factory in Serang, west of Jakarta, was capable of
producing 1 million ecstasy pills, worth $US11 million a week.
