Just two comments about the navigation links at the beginning of the webpage. A link to skip navigation can be helpful to fastly jump to the content. Using CSS, this link could be invisible for the sighted users. Though it can be also helpful to let it visible for all visitors. For example, I guess a tetraplegic person will find it helpful. This can also help to retreive the content when the screen is magnified. You may want to replace the image for each menu item by raw text and CSS, because for example web browsers are not capable to zoom in the image.
