spd-say and orca are silent

Hello folks,
So I have Debian Bookworm and Orca is silent.
If I do
spd-say test
I hear nothing.
But if I do
sudo spd-say test
I hear espeak-ng speak.
I may have made the mistake of running spd-conf with sudo and selecting system 
after I had trouble with no sudo and user configuration.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I did an apt reinstall of speech-dispatcher and a reinstall of orca, but that 
did not fix the problem.
