For the record, I figured out this part: '$$' is needed to escape '$' in
a Makefile, but in a shell it is not needed; just '$' matches an end of
line.
'$$' in a bash shell is expanded to some number; I can't figure out what
('$$' doesn't appear in the bash info manual).
