I'm not sure I agree with your point here, but I can certainly see where you're coming from. Biting off more than we can chew would certainly be a mistake, and making a system that's not backwards compatible would be a bigger one. But on the other hand -- one of our major goals is to make non-interactive installs possible, which means moving the questions that are already in postinst's somewhere else.
