So have I. Like you wrote, the kernel panics somewhere around SCSI detection. I have tried Debian's kernel-image packages and also compiling my own. I now use Linux 2.2.22 with the CONFIG_ALPHA_EXTINSNS patch (see <http://bugs.debian.org/169735>).
