It seems (from an lsmod) that I'm using the sym53c8xx module. I didn't check the boot disk yet, but I did notice that there is a ncr53c8xx module in /lib/modules/2.4.22-1-generic/kernel/drivers/scsi . Could using that module make a difference? How do I go about switching the modules? BTW, I'm using the Debian-supplied 2.4.22-1-generic kernel, not a custom-compiled one.
