This I know. We have a soft raid running on an alpha and this silly bug
of gcc-2.95 made me compile my own gcc-3.3 for compiling my own kernel.

Grmmm, well, complicated. Anyway, I will have to go for this, if nobody
else can contribute genius ideas.

What I definitely do NOT want to do to start to fiddle with initrd for
setting up and starting the raid devices, I really want the auto detect
feature. (Partly because I have no idea how to fiddle around with
initrd, I never managed to get it to work properly, and always compile
my kernels without the need for initrd).
