Well, glxgears is a graphical application and needs $DISPLAY. I would not expect that to work without -d. So I guess I should have been more specific. I was thinking more along the lines of simple commands. Something that would test if my wild guess of something to do with LD_LIBRARY_PATH or other was the problem.
