In summary, the problem was a black screen and Xorg running at 99% when using the ATI driver for my Radeon 9600 (RV350)
Kaare Hviid suggested that the problem is with setting the correct AGP mode and I might like to try Option "AGPMode" "8" in the Device section of xorg.conf. This appears to work perfectly. Angus Mackenzie
