I need a computational program on an amd64 workstation (etch, no X) to work in synthony with a graphical program on an i386 etch machine. The two machines are at a router ADSL (and differ in the last arabic of the "inet addr", which I used in attempts to establish a connection), and either one can access internet. Apache2 gets installed aside the graphical interface. The graphical interface uses socket 8080 for the server. The messaging server needs to use ports 8086, 8084, and 8088. All ports configurable, if needed.
All programs installed in my HOME on both machines, and I am the only user of both. Where to find a detailed description on how to configure ssh so that the i386 machine (or both, though only i386 needed) can also access internet and authentication in the connection between the two machines is based on public key encryption? On amd64, ssh (OpenSSH_4.3p2 Debian 8, Open SSL 0.9.8c 05 Sept 2006), as installed from etch repositories, has a curious configuration, in particular: PermitRootLogin yes UsePAM yes The latter, as far as I know, may override the public key authentication. To the former, I would pfere "su", if needed at all. There is no .ssh/known_users in my HOME.
