Well, in those next few months he might still want to use something which works, while waiting for gnash, and then switch to gnash as soon as it works well enough... A pragmatic approach to OSS is usually sensible: as far as you can, use free (as in free speech) software, if/when you can't, do what you can to promote the development of suitable free software but, in the meanwhile, use what is available to do the job. Nspluginwrapper and ndiswrapper are good surrogates, while waiting for "the real thing".
