There is more to life than OpenOffice.org ..... KOffice can handle .doc files, and so can AbiWord. There are tools to pull the text out of .doc files. Or, you could run a 64-bit browser to visit this .doc site. It's really the webmaster's problem, not yours. .doc is not a proper standard. If I were feeling vindictive, I'd suggest DDoS-ing the site.
