I was experiencing the very same problem, but just telling CUPS to use the new splix ppd did solve it. I used the web interface for that (http://localhost:631/admin/?op=modify-printer&printer_name=<replace-by-your-printer_s-name). Difficult to say that this is a bug, I am not familiar with such problems. May be it would be possible that upgrading splix change the related ppds used by cups ? The solution was already mentionned by ubuntu users https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/274829
