actually causes serious data loss. Had apache installed. Installed apache-perl.
dpkg --purge apache-perl . /etc/apache is deleted. W T F? How is it ever right
for this directory to be deleted as part of a purge operation? So yeah silly
me for not having my latest config backed up but....GAH!

I just checked (both with a visual look at the code, and with an actual
test of installing and purging packages), and purging "apache" removes
/etc/apache, and purging "apache-perl" removes /etc/apache-perl.
apache-perl does not and CAN not remove /etc/apache, with the code
shipped in the package. That means that somewhere along the way you
must have purged "apache" (perhaps when switching webservers, you purged
apache, do you could get apache-perl listening on port 80, or something?)
dpkg --purge specifically purges "everything, including configuration
files", according to the manual. Surely, if you didn't want that, you
would have "removed", not "purged"?
