PHOTO-OPS
Eight not-to-be-missed photo opportunities in Jamaica
By Jessica McCurdy Crooks

Editor's note
Jessica McCurdy Crooks lives in Jamaica. She and I planned this article in early August. On August 17, Hurricane Dean slammed into Jamaica with near Category 5 intensity. It's more personal when you know someone in the hurricane's path (and when you live in a hurricane zone yourself) and I was really concerned for her.

It wasn't until two days later that Jessica told me she was safe and -- somehow -- also managed to turn in this article at the same time, on time.

The storm took 42 lives across nine countries, including three in Jamaica -- and Jamaica also took an estimated $2 billion in damage.

Jamaica is a very special place, one I hope to visit sometime soon. The editors here at Connected Photographer debated about whether to run this article so soon after the hurricane, but decided we'd run it as a celebration of a spectacular country. Go to Jamaica. See the wonders. Take pictures. And tell your friends about it. -- DG

Jamaica's natural beauty is well known and some areas are always on the must visit list of vacationers. In addition to the natural photographic spots, the island's rich history has resulted in great houses and other historic monuments that leave lasting memories with those who experience them. While some of the locations listed below may not be on everyone's list, they are worth exploring if time allows.

The island's history and natural beauty are beyond words to describe; you have to see it for yourself to fully understand. Each of the fourteen parishes has something to offer both amateur or professional photographers and anyone in between.

Want to know what to visit in Jamaica -- and what to photograph? This is the perfect article for you.

Canon speaks image
Canon unveiled a unique fashion collection by leading British designer Matthew Williamson. The We Speak Image fashion collection was inspired by images taken by members of the public across the UK and Ireland and seeks to capture the "essence" of the nation.

To mark Canon's second year as Principal Sponsor of London Fashion Week, Canon asked members of the public to upload their most creative and iconic images--which represented the spirit of their nation--to a unique, custom-built Web site. From the 3,000 British and Irish images uploaded, the most popular were given to fashion designer Matthew Williamson who used the images to inspire a "national" fashion collection, created with the help of Canon's state-of-the-art imaging equipment.

Fair use economy
Fair Use exceptions to U.S. copyright laws are responsible for more than $4.5 trillion in annual revenue for the United States, according to the findings of an unprecedented economic study. According to the study commissioned by the Computer and Communications Industry Association and conducted in accordance with a World Intellectual Property Organization methodology, companies benefiting from limitations on copyright-holders' exclusive rights, such as "fair use"--generate substantial revenue, employ millions of workers, and, in 2006, represented one-sixth of total U.S. GDP.

The economic value of fair use
Millions of people use Google's search engine every day, but don't realize the balance inherent in U.S. copyright law helps enable it to exist. Google strongly supports the intellectual property rights of content creators and the protection of copyright. They think creators deserve to be rewarded for their work, and support the balance of copyright law as fundamental to promoting future creativity.

While protecting the rights of creators, the Constitution and the courts place limits on the rights of copyright holders. For example, copyright laws encourage others to make use of content in limited ways without seeking anyone's permission through the doctrine of "fair use." By enabling journalists, scholars, and the general public to quote from and comment on others' writings, the fair use doctrine underscores basic rights of free _expression_.

Fair use worth more than copyright
Fair use exceptions to U.S. copyright laws account for more than $4.5 trillion in annual revenue for the United States, according to a report issued on Wednesday by the Computer and Communications Industry Association.

Recent studies indicate that the value added to the U.S. economy by copyright industries amounts to $1.3 trillion, said Black. The value added to the U.S. economy by the fair use amounts to $2.2 trillion. The fair use economy's "value added" is thus almost 70% larger than that of the copyright industries.
