You could also employ a DNS server, but that would probably be overkill and BIND9 isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world to set up.
At my house I just have a linksys router with tomato loaded on it. I then have a bunch of static IP's that I have the DHCP server give out based on MAC address. You can also attach a hostname to each device too using this. The router configures DNS for you, so you can just type "ssh hostname1" or "ping hostname2" on the local network.
