for all the hosts on the network.  You could also employ a DNS server, but
that would probably be overkill and BIND9 isn't exactly the easiest thing in
the world to set up.

At my house I just have a linksys router with tomato loaded on it.  I then
have a bunch of static IP's that I have the DHCP server give out based on
MAC address.  You can also attach a hostname to each device too using this.
The router configures DNS for you, so you can just type "ssh hostname1" or
"ping hostname2" on the local network.  This is much easier than configuring
a hosts file for each machine on your network.
