If you use the original Qnap firmware, they only have a pretty minimal system installed by default and install the bigger part of the firmware onto the harddrives once you plug them in and run the initialization wizard. If you use the Debian installer, you have the option to use the harddrives for the root file system or some other attached storage like an usb drive. I use the later option with my Qnap TS219 P II and it works fine. Since the 420 doesn't seem to be that different (probably the same chipset with minor modifications), I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work with this device also.
