Just tested again with the current network installer. MBR is still
destroyed.

How to reproduce:
- say no to "want to install in mbr" question
- leave field empty when asked where to install grub
(this time i entered "doesnotexist" but mbr was destroyed anyway)
- continue without bootloader
- finish installation
- mbr is overwritten with "useless" grub

I see no obvious way using the current debian squeeze installer without
destroying the MBR.
