Some users reported to me that they ended up without a password in
/etc/shadow when installing squeeze. The error is something like
this:

Apr 11 13:22:08 finish-install: info: Running
/usr/lib/finish-install.d/06user-setup
Apr 11 13:22:08 user-setup: Shadow passwords are now on.
Apr 11 15:22:08 chpasswd[6505]: pam_winbind(chpasswd:chauthtok): valid_user:
wbcGetpwnam gave
WBC_ERR_WINBIND_NOT_AVAILABLE
Apr 11 13:22:08 finish-install: chpasswd: (user root) pam_chauthtok() failed,
error:
Apr 11 13:22:08 finish-install: System error
Apr 11 13:22:08 finish-install: chpasswd: (line 1, user root) password not
changed
Apr 11 13:22:08 finish-install: warning: /usr/lib/finish-install.d/06user-setup
returned error code 1

I suppose this is #573323 which is fixed in unstable but which has not
moved to testing yet (9 out of 10 days).

This is just FYI in case someone searches the mailing list.
