Could you use a daily build of the installer? At this step of the squeeze development, we no longer recommend using alpha1 releases. GRUB issues, particularly, should be tested with latest releases. You can find daily builds from http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. Please preferrably choose the *netboot* image (not netinst). Despite its name, it is not reserved for people who use network boot servers. It is indeed just an "as minimal as possible" image that downloads components off the network as soon as the network is up and running in D-I.
