Have you tried comparing before/after to see where this increase comes
from? Checking the compression settings would also make sense.

The significant initramfs size increase is caused by the combination of the new package firmware-nvidia-graphics, which provides firmware for Nvidia GPUs (injected by plymouth) and contains directory symlinks, and initramsf-tools < 0.143 which converts directory symlinks into real directories and duplicate their contents. It seems that initramfs-tools 0.143, currently in experimental, fixes the issue.
