Yes... this actually has a long history in Debian, see #161931.
Hm. Just checked the kernel source and it appears while it is possible to have vesafb as a module, the actual mode switch must be done during kernel initialization in real mode.
Hence, if no vga=??? statement (with a graphical mode) is given, modprobing vesafb later should do .. nothing (since vesafb itself cannot switch the mode).
Now I am confused....
Max, could you please try connecting an external VGA monitor to your box, go through the installer and see if you can find out what exactly happens during boot (like syslog, dmesg, etc)?
