Package: discover-data-udeb Version: 2.2004.02.24-3 Severity: important Tags: d-i
The reduced discover-data package have complete vendor lists included. This is a waste of space, and make the package a lot larger than it have to be. And space is a vital consideration for d-i. This is the current content: usr/share/discover: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 220 Mar 24 08:22 ata-busclass.xml.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 166 Mar 24 08:22 ata-device.xml.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 132 Mar 24 08:22 ata-vendor.xml.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 292 Mar 24 08:22 list.xml.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 412 Mar 24 08:22 pci-busclass.xml.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6343 Mar 24 08:22 pci-device.xml.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 17732 Mar 24 08:22 pci-vendor.xml.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 229 Mar 24 08:22 pcmcia-busclass.xml.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 371 Mar 24 08:22 pcmcia-device.xml.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 209 Mar 24 08:22 pcmcia-vendor.xml.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 228 Mar 24 08:22 scsi-busclass.xml.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 108 Mar 24 08:22 scsi-device.xml.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4903 Mar 24 08:22 scsi-vendor.xml.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 232 Mar 24 08:22 usb-busclass.xml.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 99 Mar 24 08:22 usb-device.xml.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10596 Mar 24 08:22 usb-vendor.xml.gz As you can see, the majority of the package consist of the pci-vendor.xml.gz, scsi-vendor.xml.gz and usb-vendor.xml.gz files. Redusing these to only contain the vendors mentioned in the device files should reduce the package to a fraction of its current size. The version 1 discover-data-udeb was 10k. The version 2 udeb is 46k. It would be nice to get the version 2 udeb down to the old size. At the moment it is hard to switch to discover version 2 in d-i because of this size. I set the severity to important because the size might be the deciding factor when selecting between discover 1 and 2. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
